Gibside - A piece of the countryside on the edge of the city.

When staying at Hedgefield House why not discover fine Derwent Valley views and open spaces or take some time out to explore the elegant buildings and ruins. Stunning 18th-century landscape garden and haven for nature.

There is over 15 miles of footpaths, gardens, riverside and woodland to explore at your own pace.

Gibside is a Georgian ‘grand design’ and was the vision of coal baron George Bowes. The stable block is now a discovery and learning centre, with the once grand hall now a dramatic shell.

If its wildlife you’re interested in then Gibside is a haven for wildlife with the magnificent red kites often circling in the skies above.

After years of decline Gibside is now being restored for people and nature to enjoy. Its a great place to escape to on a weekend and enjoy the miles of tranquil walks and picnic spots. There is also an adventure play area and woodland play trail for the children.

You can also grab some food at our cafe, local farm shop or why not try and catch the farmers’ market that comes twice a month.
