Tyne Bridges

There are six different bridges spanning the Tyne River. The three most internationally famous are:

  • The High Level Bridge
  • The Swing Bridge
  • The Tyne Bridge

The oldest is the High Level Bridge opened in 1849. A two-level structure almost 165ft/50m high. The upper level for trains, the lower for motor vehicles.

In 1876 the Swing Bridge was opened. However, the oldest constructed bridge and real, symbolic identity of the city is The Tyne Bridge. King George V officially opened the Tyne Bridge in 1928.
