Respecting Nature

Following on from our blog on the health benefits of nature we must realise that to reap these benefits we first need to learn to respect nature. There are many ways we can do this whether you are hiking or simply strolling through the woods. We’ve coupled together a nice simple list of things you can do and refrain from doing when out and about.

1. Be careful where you step!

If you are walking about in nature it is often wise to stick to paths and tracks made for walking on. Going off track can not only effect what’s growing around you but can often have hidden hazards such as concealed rocks which might lead to a sprained ankle. If, however you are desperate to go for a wonder then be cautious as to wear you put your feet. People often cause damage to wildlife by stepping on various plants and disturbing homes in the ground by treading on the above ground so if you can’t be good then be careful!

2. Berry & Plant Picking

Again nature can be just as dangerous to us as we can be to it and a prime example of this are the various berries you will find about. Some are safe to eat such as wild blackberries and strawberries but others can often cause horrible problems to your system (In more polite terms they will go right through your body). The best cause of action when it comes to berries is that if you aren’t 100% certain that they are safe to eat then DO NOT eat them. This also goes for any wild mushrooms you might find on your journey.

More often then not you will come across some lovely flowers on your travels but you should leave them be instead of picking them which causes the flower to die anyway! Similar when picking edible plants and weeds like nettles and dandelion leaves, only take snippings to ensure it doesn’t kill the entire thing. That way you can enjoy a delicious guilt free meal!

3. Wildlife

Yes fluffy bunnies and chicks are all very cute and awfully tempting to try and pet or get a closer look but you are doing more harm then good. The best thing you can do is observe from a distance and take some pictures. Wild animals will panic when humans try and get too close and it’s cruel to willingly cause that to happen.

4. Litter

Going for a stroll outdoors and having a picnic can make for a wonderful day out but people often ruin that experience by not clearing up after themselves. Litter can not only be a hazard to the wildlife but also looks awful strewn across the ground. If you can’t find a bin then carefully collect all your litter and put it into a plastic bag for when you do come across one, it doesn’t have to be a chore!

5. Mans best friend

Dogs love a walk as much as most people but always be aware of where you are walking them. Some locations require dogs to be kept on a lead at all times to avoid disturbing the wildlife in the vicinity. Always carry around bags with you in case your dog happens to need the toilet because there’s nothing more unpleasant then accidentally stepping in dog muck.
