Spending Your Winter in the North East


Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, there are plenty of events to suit you in the North East in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland…

Christmas is the time for panto and with such a varied selection of shows available, it can be hard to choose which one to see. If you like celebrity spotting, Jack and the Beanstalk, which is hosted at the pop up The Pantodrome in Times Square between 11th and 30th December, is a good option. Starring I’m a Celebrity…star Adam Thomas, and the home grown Denise Welch, tickets begin at £18.

Just part of the festive celebrations held in Beamish, the ice rink offers 20 minute sessions for £5 for adults and £4 for children. Enjoy the fairground organ music then head to the nearby stalls to warm up with a hot chocolate between 18th December and 25th February.

The classic Christmas film Home Alone will be played on the big screen at Sage Gateshead accompanied by a live orchestra. Ticket costs vary from £16.50 to £39.50 for the only show on 3rd December.

Kielder Winder Wonderland, on from 18th November – 20th December, includes visits to the elves workshop, Mrs Christmas and of course Santa himself. You can take part in snow tubing, ice skating and meet the resident reindeer and snowy owl for £38 per person.

Just one of many events held at The Word, South Shields over the festive period, Christmas Tales is perfect for the younger visitors who will enjoy the magical storytelling session on 9th, 16th and 23rd December. Tickets are just £3.50 per child and £2.50 per adult.

The after-dark Enchanted Parks events returns to Saltwell Park, Newcastle between the 5th and 10th December, at a cost of £8 per adult and £3 per child. Commissioned artists transform the area into a magical wonderland ready to make imaginations run wild.
